I've searched the postings and have tried to relate to our problem with no real luck, could just be a lack of understanding.

We have an 80hp at the cottage. Last year it ran intermitatly when cold..sounded like it was missing a cyl. Once it warmed up or was used a bit it ran great, although hard to start.

This year, it wouldn't start so we thought we would take it to a shop to have it fix and tuned. (get a little neglected)

Stader was replaced, still won't start well, and sounds like it is missing. Any suggestions?, How would I check if one of the coils is gone? Would a bad coil impede starting. This is a 4cyl. I would have thought a bad coil would still allow the motor to start but it wouldn't run right.

Motor turns over, choke moves, starter is a little slow at times and does not retract properly (working at lubing that)

Any advise would be appreciated.

A bad coil can certainly cause your problems. They can be checked with an Ohm meter but that is not a 100% check. Go to your local automotive store and get an inexpensive spark checker.

do you mean the little ones the snap into the sparkplug wire?? Got one, that is how we determined no spark before hence the shop and new stader.

Is there a way to test if the new stader is faulty?

You can check the stator with an ohm meter but you really should have a manual to do it right.

I'm not sure what kind of shop lets a poorly-running motor out their door anyway! Was it running OK right after the stator replacement?

If not, the shop should have guaranteed their diagnosis and parts replacement and repaired the problem under warranty. If there was another bad part they failed to find, they should replace it at no labor charge to you, just $$$ for the part itself.

If you have a timing lite, that's an easy way to check for spark while it's running. Or the spark indicator that you bought.

If you find that one cylinder isn't sparking and you suspect a coil, remove the coil and inspect for cracks. Do a resistance check as suggested. You can also swap coils and see if the problem follows the coil. It's possible to have a bad CDI unit do this. I assume the shop checked the trigger too, yes??

HTH & Good Luck.......ed

Check for corrosion/breakage of the wires coming from the trigger to the switchbox. They are prone to corrosion. The way I did it was a bit primative, but effective. I used a 3vDC battery some wire and a globe.Solder it all up in series and have a sharp probe (pin) at each end. Remove some insulation right up near the trigger and insert a probe into the wire. Find the other end near the switchbox and insert the other pin. If the globe lights up you have a circuit. If not it's broken. You can also do this using a Multimeter if it has probes.
