1982 80HP Merc Stuck in gear after replacing the impeller HELP!!!

I just replaced the impeller in my friends boat which has a 1982 80HP and now its stuck in forward, even when you spin the shaft that goes into the shift rod it still just stays in forwards. It never had any problems shifting before. I'm lost I have no idea what it could be.

1982 merc 80 hp stuck in frd gear after water pump install HELP How did you fix it???? I have removed shift linkage so I can move by hand I have teried to load the clutch sring just before clicking over but no sail!!!! I have found neutral in a all foward position on the shift lever I am lost for ideas???
