1982 70 hp Johnson J70ELCN. I am rebuilding carbs and do not have the special gauge to set float. I know the float needs to be level, but does anyone know distance from top of bowl unit, to bottom of float?? Dont really want to order one and have to wait another week.

Top of float parallel with the cover is the best you will do without the guage, Slayer.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for input JB. I added model # to post. I guess I will try it without guage.

Go ahead and eyeball it if it floods just set the float down a little. If it starves just raise it a little. Usally if you set it level with the top it will work ok.

You want it parallel to the carb body, not level with it.

Carbs are back in and ready for float test. Starts right up in drive. Top carb had a little gas in throat. Is this a problem? Mon or Tue I will get it in water for a real test. Origional prob was loosing power when warm, and plugs were very wet. Compression 132 in all cyl. new coils and plugs.

Boat back in water and running good. Origional prob gone. Rebuilding carbs did it. Just have to adjust throttle cable and I should be set. It isnt returning to idle RPM unless I push it back. Console was origionally in center of boat. I moved it to side and back. Will same cable work, or do I need to get a shorter one?
