1982 40hp mercury 2 cyl. no fire need help

:confused:my #2 coil not firing swaped coils and #2 still no fire. if i disconnect wires from # 1 coil the #2 coil will fire. any suggestions

i think it might be the switch box not sure an dont know how to test just got this boat and it is supposed to have a new switch box but their are two wires just stuck under the box and do not look right one is the switch box ground and the other goes to the negative post on the #1 coil is it supposed to be just stuck under the switch box or where does it go

can anyone tell me where the black wir that goes to the #1 coil ground post hooks to at the switch box

It should be connected to ground...

when i connect the black wire to ground my #1 coil will fire but it kills #2 COIL if i disconnect it my #2 will fire and kills my #1 coil :(

anyone know where i can purchase a manual for this engine with test procedures and wiring diagrams

Mercury marine.. Have your engine serial number, go to their website and place your order...

Or are you looking for this?

As it's useless, I have removed it...

what do yall think about the seloc manuls advertised on this web site. is there enough info for a 23 year automotive mechanic in them to saftely work on a 40 hp merc? plus their cheaper and ill need the extra cash for parts:)

I'm no expert but, the experts on this forum don't recommend seloc or clymer manuals. Too general and too many models covered. Try ebay or kencook.com. Hope this helps.

Either buy the manual or look at the drawing I posted... If that isn't a wiring diagram, what is it?

this is what i was looking for and yes that was a wiring diagram but it was usless without some futher instructions.
