Hi Guys

I thinking about buying this boat, I'm told it's an Islander but it looks like a chieftain to me, what do you think?

This is what i know about the boat:
last in the water 2008
It's an estate sale (as is)
Comes with tons of fishing gear
4hp trowling motor
Was partilly winterized
told the motor runs good

Asking price $2000 canadian, is this a far price?

I'm going to look at it on the weekend if it doesn't sell before then.
Any information would be helpful, Thanks

That is a Chieftain...nice rig:)

What kind of motors are we talking about?

The 4hp is a kicker outboard, I'm assuming it's an inboard/outboard for the main motor? I/O is best if it's a Mercruiser. OMC and Merc 470 I/Os are difficult to get parts for if at all.

2k would be a decent price if both motors are in running condition and the trailer and hull are in good shape.

Thanks Huron

It's an I/O Mercruiser 175hp and a Yamaha 4hp kicker.

What would you expect to pay for a boat like this if it was in excellent condition?

Thanks

Well it's worth a lot more with a mercruiser than if it were an OMC:D so you scored points there. That I/O would plane her out very well.

The Yamaha 4hp...depending on the year could be worth $500+

Is it a 4 stroke or 2?

For the package(since it does look to be in good shape although we need more pics) I'd say...assuming both motors run great and the transom/deck is all in great shape(possibly not the case)...in the ballpark of $2500-4000 us funds.

If that thing is pristine inside and out and the motors check out...could be more.

If that transom or deck is soft and the merc or yamaha needs anything then $500-1500.

That's my opinion...they may be asking way more than that since people do get attached to these old gems:)

its a chieftain, I have a 1986 21 foot with a merc 140 I/O.
$2,000 seems like a fair price. But with a 1982 you could have a lot of things that need done.
My list on my 1986 has been alot of things in the past 5 yrs of use.
New engine, new outdrive, new floor, new transom, new alternator, new starter, new manifold, trailer modification (that boat weight is about 4,000lbs on the trailer fully loaded), my trailer axles are only rated for 4,000lbs with no brakes, new fuel lines, drained and cleaned the tanks (they had water in them), and a few other modifications I just wanted to make. All the other work liste was necessary.

I would find out what was done to winterize.
Could have some serious issues if it's raw water cooled.
Price seem's to be good not great.

^^^What he said.

If it checks out though....that's a STEAL! My buddy bought one with an outboard the end of last season for like $1500US but it wasn't as cherry as that one.

Re: 1982 21' Starcraft Islander or Chieftain?

Thanks Guys for the input.

The problem is the boat is at least a 2hr drive from my place and I get the feeling that the person selling the boat knows nothing about it (estate sale). So getting information has been difficult.

When I look at it on Sunday is there some easy things I can look for that would tell me if the engine has been winterized? I've never owned an I/O.

Thanks Again

Sweet find there! I would second exactly what Huron said earlier. It's a tough call at the $2000 mark. Maybe a steal if everything is in great shape or it may be good money after bad if you have issues with motor, outdrive, floor, transom and so on. By your photo only, it looks pretty darn good! Have fun!

If the hull and interior are nice, and the trailer is nice, and it's the boat you want, it would be hard to go wrong. I got my SS for a $1000 and didn't even try to start the engine till I got home cuz I knew for that price I would still make out whether it ran or not (it ran).

If I were you I'd post this question over in the I/O section...there are some gurus over there that can help you out regarding winterization.

Good luck with the rig:D
