I’m trying to change the prop on my 1981 Evinrude 15hp and I can’t get it off. It seems that it has never been taken off so a lot of debris is just built up and I don’t know if I’m missing something or what

It should slide right off.-----In salty water the prop should be removed about once a year to grease the splines.-----Try a hammer and a block of wood.

Prop splines are frozen or corroded up. WD 40 or whatever penetrating oil you have with some mild heat on the prop portion. Careful with the heat because you have a rubber bushing. Once you've done that a little "hammer shocking" and pray.

Work carefully and you might get rewarded.

Sometimes the prop itself falls apart.

Like Race says, prop grease at least once a year. Drive shaft is probably worse.
