1981 70 johnson?????

the dowel pins in the crankcase do not have line up holes in the bearing sleeves???????(or do they)?????

Are you saying that you have bearing sleeves do not have retaining holes machined in them....... or are you asking if the bearings are equipped with the retaining holes?

I have yet to see one of those bearings that do not have the retaining holes machined in them.

no machined holes in the bearing for the dowel pins to sit...

That would indicate to me that those bearings do not belong in any Evinrude or Johnson engine.

after i went and insected the work today ....................yep your right !!!!!! actually the bearings did have alignment holes , but had not been aligned properly. the crancase was bolted up and the bearing sleeve pushed the dowel pins flush with the case !!!!! now i have taken the engine home and i need to figure out how to remove the dowel pins so new ones can be placed.
