Hi everyone

I have a 1981 Johnson 50 hp and I have been thinking of putting a nice loud stereo on my boat but, I'm not sure how much power output I will get from the engine.
what do you guys think can i install a stereo and still get enough charge so i can start the engine if i turn if off ?
obviously Im not going to sit in one spot with the engine off and blast the stereo.
THANK YOU all in advance:confused::confused::confused:

You don't think I would get enough charge to keep it going?
How much charge do these old engines put out ?

They put out more of a charge on the ocean, once you are past the 3 mile limit . . . then you can remove your headphones :D

Agree- Be best to get one of those little transistor radios & have a few xtra 9V batteries on board ;)

Through experience, I can tell you that a boom box with 8 "D" batteries sounds just as good and you'll never need to worry about it draining your start battery. Some stereos will drain large batteries with large motors doing their best to keep them charged. By going portable on the radio, you have the best of both worlds AND you can take your music with you up on the beach for picnic time.

I think those old mtr's only put out 4 amps at wot and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.

Ok so despite all the good opinions I'm getting I decided to do a test.
I hooked up my stereo just as planned and blasted it for 2 hours to see what would happen.
The result was that after 2 hours of blasting the music the engine still turned over.
This was using only 1 deep cycle battery. Im planning on taking 2
One for use and 1 as back up.
To the lake of course. I'll never do that in the ocean.
What do you guys think of that?
Some guy suggested a
generator/inverter.

I have a 240W head unit (no external amp) in my rig and its never run my battery (700cca) down to the point of no return yet.....it should be fine provided you manage the situation.

If it runs your battery down, you can always pull start it.
