I let my brother inlaw barrow my outboard. When I got it back, I used at a lake and found it VERY difficult to shift!!! No reverse at all and luckly the motor was starting for me while in gear, otherwise I wouldn't of gotten to fish that day after a long drive!! Well today I found time to take a closer look at it and this is what I found, (gap between the blue)

He must of hit a rock and broke this metal seal around prop, both places where the bolts go to hold it in place are broken and the lower unit was full of black water NOT gear oil!!!! and the shear pin was bent too. aaarrrhhh!!

Anyone know where I can buy a replacement one?

Or do I buy a lower unit??

Oh man, that's nasty looking. I don't know you will find a new one, I think they run in the high $300 range. I looked around a little and best I saw was 'call us'. You can certainly call your Honda dealer, they can see what is to find.

Also go looking for one that blew up a motor.

If it was mine I might try tig welding it if I could get the bearing mounts to line up. No idea if that is possible without taking it apart. A good welder might be able to sew er back up.

Good luck.

Believe it or not, 'holder'. I am guessing on model, based on serial numbers. But so far everyone has stated not available or call.

I didn't realize that the ears were broken off. I thought the case looked broken. Ears at least can be welded on and redrilled without really worrying about center alignment of the bearing.

Re: 1980s Honda 7.5 ........

Thanks! I was going to buy a lower off ebay, but I ended up finding the part itself on ebay. And of all the places on ebay only one place had it, and it was 20mins from where i live, so I went and picked it up!! I have it all back together now!!! YAAAA!!!!

So I put gear lube back in it, I don't remember gear oil coming out of this hole or exhaust?? Did i put too much in? Or is something wrong. I've only changed the gear oil one other time. It's been sometime since I did it last, since I don't use this motor often.

Something wrong. Oil out exhaust is probably the upper input shaft seal. The other circled area shouldn't exist.

Thanks alot Rick so far! I guess you are the only person on this whole website that knows anything! haha

Ok so the oil is only coming out of the shifter rod. I replaced the O-ring. It still coming out of there. Something doesn't seem right. Like the o-ring area doesn't go down far enough to plug the hole?? I will post pictures later......

That's a BIG LOL. I know just enough to be dangerous and sharing it is even more so :^) There's some folks around here that could point to a part laying on the table and tell you what year it came out of. I can't EVEN pretend their knowledge.

A couple thoughts on the shift rod o-ring. It is easy to replace, on a positive note. But if the shifter isn't in right it can hold the guide up and prevent the water pump from seating all the way. You can also break the tab off the pump housing that hold that guide down all the way, in which case it would raise up and leak water in and oil out.

That guide the one that came with the new unit or the one off the old? Nice to have a spare.
