Going to look at a 1980 Evinrude 9.9 LS that was used as a EM kicker, and will do the same on my 25 foot. I would rather have a Johnson, but he said this one runs perfect. This year any difference between it and a Johnny? Have no idea of hours, but the one side/corner on the hood is well faded, indicating a tilted up and turned to one side in the sun life. Should I go for it? I will look for the usual suspects...( a wrench all my life) Thanx

There is no difference between the Evinrude and Johnson 9.9 (other than paint and decals). So, dont let the Evinrude brand influence the decision, unless you just don't like the name/colors. If you look around, you could probably do better than $400. Then again, these are great small motors, and if it's in good shape, you can get many more years out of it for your $400. You could probably pay much more for a brand new 9.9 that will be dead when the old 1980 is still kicking. If I was in the market for one of these I don't think I'd feel any remorse for paying $400 for a good one. Also, is the $400 etched in stone? If not, offer $300 and compromise at $350.

good used, maintained motors are hard to find, i paid $300 for 1955 15hp, because it was greatly maintained. cowlings can be painted and redecaled.

In my area small motors like that are golden. We're in a freshwater, 3-5 month season area, so even older motors aren't necessarily "old". If it's been taken care of, then it is certainly worth that, particularly if you won't have to have anything done to it. If you have to put a waterpump kit in it, new plugs, etc. then definitely offer a bit less up front...
- Scott

Similar to Scott's area, 9.9's are premium engines arounds this area and $400 would be an excellent price.

Do get a test drive and see that it's not overheating and will run as advertised. These little engines are tough and have a proven track record.
