Bought a very used 16 Bass Tracker with 40 hp Mercury. The previous owner said it stopped running in the middle of the river and believes its the stator? The boat/motor has sat outside for about six years, however motor is not froze. I thought I would buy a Seloc and get started tinkering with it after I refurbish the interior/exterior of the boat. Any advise on the motor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Put some two stroke mix in the cylinders before tinkering too much.
Drop the LU first as well too as you could end up with old impeller blocking up the channels
Check the wiring for signs of internal corrosion

Welcome to the forum. Good advice here.
As above, pull the plugs and lube the cylinders and rings before you spin it.
CDI's website can take you through ignition troubleshooting. CDI Electronics | Outboard Motor Parts | Ignitions | Marine Engine Diagnostic System | Stators | Ignition Packs | Regulators | Coils | Wiring Harnesses
Do compression and air gap spark tests. Troubleshoot ignition. Change lower unit oil. Change water pump impeller. Get new fuel tank gas lines. Mix new fuel. Spray some premix into the carb and see if it fires up.
