now that ive managed to get the darned thing off, i have a few questions.

i am taking the block apart to replace half of it cause the starter mounts broke off. while i have it apart, and all the innerds are exposed, is there anything else i should do while im in there( since im in there ya know)

should i re ring it or replace any bearings or what not?

i ask cause i figure, its not often that we have our motors apart like this(usually)

all ideas are appreciated

by the way, compression is a healthy 122 per cylinder

I wouldn't, but that's me not you...

122 psi in each cylinder is nothing to mess with IMO....

I assume you don't have to replace the cylinder block anyway...

I am sure you guys know your stuff, you certainly have helped me out on several occasions in my short but eventfull boating career, please excuse me for querying that the two halves of the block are machined together. Therefore they make a matched pair and should not be replaced on their own.

This is something I picked up on this board, appologies if I am asking a dumb question.

Regards all Keith B......

Thats what mercury and most shops will recommend, but with enough goop and a little luck,I guess some people get away with a lot

Laddie is correct. They are line bored as a unit and should not be interchanged.

That said............

I have had to mix (two so far career) to save an otherwise good block motor. One fit right up like it grew there. On the other, I had to remove the 2 locating pins and let the bearing blocks be the "line guide".

When dealing with 30 year old motors - and the realities that these parts aren't available anymore, people adapt.

-W
