1980 is smoking like crazy

Bought an old boat the other day and it came with a 1980 SeaKing by Chrysler 15hp motor. Saw on a post somewhere that the gas to oil mixture was 50:1. Is this true? Mixed up some fuel using that ratio, used some starting fluid and it starts and runs but smokes really bad, added more gas to it and smokes less but still quite a bit. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Also... Anyone know where we can buy replacement parts for it such as points or gaskets or anything else we might need?

Thanks

50 to 1 is correct and yes, these engines smoke a lot. Replacement parts are the same as for Chrysler and early Force. Some can be found here on iboats and some on competing on line stores. franzmarine@aol is also an excellent source.

How long did you run it for? Could have been over fogged before put away for the winter.

Are you running it on a boat, on the lake? Or in a tub or on a hose? Run it on a boat where it was made to run and it probably will smoke a lot less. Especially, after it runs awhile to "blow it out".

Things that will make it smoke abnormally:

Carburetor out of adjustment.
Ruptured fuel pump diaphragm.
Was fogged for storage.
Somebody squirted oil in the cylinders to check compression (that's cheating)
Prolonged running at idle.
Running on one cylinder (other cylinder is just dumping fuel into the exhaust)
Too much oil in the gas (50:1 is NOT too much)
Cheap oil. Full Synthetic TC-W3 smokes a lot less.

The motor is on the boat, we filled a trash can with water and put under the motor to start it.

It ran several times for several minutes and smoking didnt get any better. Dad thought the gas to oil mixture was to high so he kept adding gas to it thinking that was the problem. Ill let him know 50:1 is right. We are using regular 87 octane and Mercury brand oil.

Well it wasn't 50 parts oil to 1 part gas, was it? This is, of course, a crappy joke. It can smoke all it wants in the first 5 minutes in the barrel - If it's not missin', pizzin' and poppin', I'd make it shove me and the boat down the river a while, and start to get to know it. Go upstream from the ramp till ya trust it. And make sure it will start without that durned starting fluid, too.
