Recently my 1980 E70elcsa 70hp Evinrude started losing power after a few minutes of running at plane. Feels like it's dropped a cylinder. Doesn't seem to be fuel related, I think I have a bad coil or similar. Sometimes while it's bogging, it will suddenly spring to life and you can feel a sudden kick of acceleration. Then it bogs back down suddenly.
After it cools down for a half hour I can usually get it back on plane for maybe 30 seconds.
When it loses power, it runs rough and idles rough, frequently shutting off, and I smell unburnt gas.
I have more investigating to do but I have no idea how old the coil packs and power pack is on this old engine. Take a look at the pics. Is this goo leaking out an indication of a failing coil pack? 2 of them are leaking but the top one is leaking the most, and it looks like it spurted some of it onto the power pack at some point.
Next question. Are OEM coil packs the best way to go here or are there aftermarket coils I should consider? I know in automotive stuff I never buy anything but OEM.
Background info:
Spark plugs are brand new Champion (Problem existed prior to plug swap).
Fuel is brand new, 50:1, with a fairly new hose and filter. Pumping the bulb does not change the rough running, neither does pushing in the key to engage the primer.
