I have a 1978 140hp Merc that I'm about to install on a project hull. I'm replacing seals in the lower unit and the timing belt. I was cruising craigslist and came across a 1980 90hp Merc with a stainless prop for $200. I'm thinking about picking it up for parts, but I'm not sure how many things interchange.

Everything below the powerhead will swap. About the powerhead, it will swap as a unit but you will need to swap exhaust tuners. Internals are different. Carbs are different, will fit but are not the same. Totally different ignition systems. Your 78 uses the electrical connector on the starboard side of the lower cowl. I might be wrong but I believe in 1980 they quit using that and switched to a direct wiring harness.

You are correct.. I'm thinking I should just pass on it. I could get my money back out of the prop and the lower unit but it's a lot of hassle. The boat is an hour away and I would have to take my engine house and air tools.
