And another one! since the 40hp is breaking my chops, and the 'dependable' 25 won't start I grabbed the little motor.

yeah you guessed it.

It isn't even trying to start. It was put away winterized, fogged, stabilizer, etc two years ago and hasn't been run since.

now it wasn't even trying to kick over, usually three pulls in the spring and she goes all year one pull. So I swapped new plugs and still nothing.

In going over it I found a tiny crack in the fuel line right after it is inside the motor housing I put a new piece in and sl-pliced it into the rest of the line, it's holding fine.

so, now, where do I start trying to make this thing run?

1952,
Gees!! Seems you ARE having a bit of trouble aren't you?? As for the 9.9, does it have spark?? Try squirting some pre-mix into the carb throat , pull the rope to see if it pops. If it runs and dies, I'd look at carb, fuel pump and fuel lines.

Woops, I looked again and you already said it didn't have spark....Have you checked the coils, points and condensers?? I'm not sure if you have CD ignition..(On second thought, I think you do) You might try disconnecting the ground lead on your kill switch too, this can kill the fire. Testing of the charge coil and sensor coils are next.

such a simple thing, air, fuel and spark and it should run.

ok, I saw he sprk wires are pretty shot and corroded even after buffing up with emery they jsut look iffy, 23 years so who can complain, new wires came in today fed ex ( no one makes wires any more here) and I have spark.

No go though, it doesn't even try to kick over.

a little shot of premix in each cyl and still nothing. I pulled the plugs gave it a pull to blow out the gas in case I gave it too much , re-plugged, no go. pulled them dried them no go, pulled them and gave a tiny shot of starter fluid, no go.

so now I have spark and with a drop of gas in the cyls. I would think it would at least pop if the fuel pump was bad, right?

new filter, new line, new gas, no go.

but I have spark and a sore shoulder. more ideas, I'm listening. thanks!

The next thing I would suggest would be to pull the flywheel and see if the woodruff or crank shaft key is sheared, this would throw off the timming by a wide margin. You're getting spark but perhaps it's coming at the wrong time. A fresh set of plugs couldn't hurt either. When you say it has spark, did you have the plugs out when you tested for spark?? Or did you remove a plug boot , insert screwdriver and hold the screwdriver shaft near the powerhead ground and pull rope to test?

BTW, when you have the flywheel off, look closely at the 2 coils under there. You should have a larger coil (the charge coil) and a smaller one (trigger coil). Look for anything that might be toasted, coils with dark spots, frayed wires, dead rats etc.

Hi again EAW....geez....do we live next door to each other?

OK ya' got spark. But how much? Ya' need to rig a spark tester that you can set a 3/8 to 7/16 inch gap in. Connect the spark plug wires to it and see if the spark will jump the gap. If not, either the charge coil went south or the power pack is done. You can take a look at the charge coil and see if it has deteriorated and may be jumping to ground. It's under the flywheel. But do try the spark test
