I have a 35 hp johnson outboard that I have noticed a black substance ozzing from the holes in the lower unit. I took the lower unit apart thinking it was lower unit lube getting into the water pump but that was OK. It smells like fuel oil. Anyone have any ideas what it is and what I can do about it.
Thanks fellow boaters,
DON

I believe a new base gasket is needed, and decarb the motor every 50 hrs gl

Re: 1980 35hp Johnson outboard

when you say you took the lower unit apart, did you just take the lower unit off, or did you actually take the lower unit apart?

the oozzz is normal carbon, unburned fuel/oil mix take gets trapped in the exhaust leg. an those are weep holes. it's very normal.

while you have it off is an excellant time to change the impeller.
