My tiller us about to be outfitted with a new to me stainless prop, the original aluminum prop is held on only by a nylon nut, would this be satisfactory, seems like it would need something else, there is no place for cotter pin.

???-----There is no place for a cotter pin.----But cosidering the cost of the stainless prop you could put one in there.---------Find a stainless nut to fit.----Install the nut and drill a hole through the nut and shaft for a pin.---Install a stainless pin.-----Now no more worry !

Or you could go buy a good stainless lock nut for it. That's all I did with mine been on for years.

I know the factory nut is adequate.----But the owner is concerned about loosing a $$$$ stainless prop.

I have a stainless prop on my 87 mercury 25 hp. A stainless lock nut is adequate don't get the nylok get the nut with the dimple in the side. If you are worried about theft that's a whole different animal not much stops a thief. I run 4 of these motors for duck hunting they hit stuff fairly regularly never had a prop fall off because of the nut coming off or failing. From the way it sounds racer you see these props fall off fairly regularly. Is this something I need to know otherwise I will switch all my prop nuts to stainless lock nuts. I am curious if they have a high failure rate you have been doing this longer than me.

Sounds like drilling a hole in the propshaft is a serious over reaction to a problem that doesn't exist. Mercury used that system on the 25 hp for I think over 20 yrs with no problems really doesn't need to be re-engineered. Post #9 says no real problem with the original system so buy a new nut and happy boating. If you want to stop a thief Buy a prop lock no cotter pin made will stop a thief.

I ran Merc 25's with the nylon nut holding on stainless props for 30 years without a prop falling off. I would, however, suggest getting a new nylon nut. They are a "lock nut" meaning its a designed thread "interference" to keep it from backing off.
