1980 115 outboard -- Remove my flywheel

OK, my repair manual tells me a special flywheel puller is best, and I as usual tried with other equipment.

I used a standard flywheel puller that only pulls on two screws at once. Not wanting to force things I tried and tried gently. No budge.

Is there a special trick, should I get the special device?

I tested my stator (bad), and suppose I will have to test the trigger while the flywheel is off.

I also read of a rewind service in a previous post, and wonder if that is fine or if I should drop $175 on a new one.

I have had success with a 3-jaw type puller, threaded into three of the center bolt holes. Tapping -lightly- on the center rod helps. Be sure to protect the end of the crankshaft from damage.

I also made my own puller that threads into the center as the Mercury part does. You can find them on eBay quite often.

I've never heard of a rewind service for a stator or trigger. You may be able to get one from rapair at reduced prices though.

Good luck.

Well, maybe you're being too gentle! You have to snug down the center screw on the puller quite tightly; then, while pulling upwards with moderate force on the puller, give the center screw a sharp "rap" with a 5-lb hammer. The 5-lb has enough "oommph" behind it, a smaller one won't do as well and will bounce a lot.

Note that you should have the flywheel nut threaded on a few threads, sometimes the flywheel will jump right up at you unless you don't.

Also note that an air impact wrench makes it a whole lot easier to break the flywheel loose. The combination of a lot of torque and the hammering impacts will usually bust the flywheel loose right away.

Make sure you're using Grade 8 or better puller bolts or they may break.

You can also apply heat from a propane or MAPP gas torch, to the center of the flywheel hub; this'll expand the hub a bit and help free it from the crankshaft.

The correct Merc-type flywheel puller does work quite well, though, and you may end up needing to get one if you can't bust it loose using the above methods.

Be sure to wear eye protection, and gloves don't hurt either!

They key is to avoid hitting the shaft with a hammer if possible. If you just can't get the flywheel to budge then lightly tapping on the center puller bolt may be the only option. Tap on it as you apply force. Keep in mind that your hammering on the bearings, and the lower bearing cover is cast aluminum. Whacking it with a 5lb sledge may be a bit risky -- crack--

Good suggestion to keep the nut on a few threads if you can.

Yes 4 brains are better than mine alone. Thanks so much for the opinions.

I had all of these thoughts, so timid I am going to be.

Boatfix.com offers the stator rewind for $25 I have heard. Takes 2 weeks or so I am told. Those two weeks could be on the water, though and $175 is not that big a deal. Anybody who has seen a rewind done might reassure me and I'll save the money for whatever else goes wrong..

Does that motor have the two piece flywheel? If so, you should be able to remove the 8 5/16" bolts on the outer flywheel, and leave the inner flywheel alone. The stator should be visible.

Re: 1980 115 outboard -- Remove my flywheel

I'll assume the flywheel is one piece. 8 bolts close in, 8 bolts at the outside, all bolts seem to hold a plate that goes over the entire flywheel top. To remove the plate I would have to remove all 16 bolts.

I notice now, the stator wiring is hooked up differently than my SELOC manual says it should be.

RW/BW is connected where R/B should be and vice versa. Should that matter? I have seeen it run good, but wonder if I should put them where the chart says they should be????

90LBKing, Those inner 8 bolts (on my '77 Merc) remove the red flywheel, leaving the flywheel inner hub. My stator is removeable, without taking the inner hub off.

Ensure you note the position of the flex plate vs. the hub, before you unbolt. Be sure to torque those hub bolts and put a drop of red Loctite on each before reassembling.

P.S. I don't advocate beating the Cr*p out of the motor with a hammer, however sometimes you need a bit of persuasion. The heavier hammer, applied judiciously, has enough mass to get the job done with out repeated beatings! The key is applying upwards force on the puller, which helps counteract the shock of the hammer. And if it doesn't come loose with one or two raps, no sense pounding on it further.
