Jdman
I asume you have checked the choke and it is not stuck shut. Also the Backflame aresster is not plugged up. I guess you could have a bad fuel pump diafram. The clear plastic hose from the fuel pump to the carburetor should not have any fuel in it. If it does the fuel pump is bad. Also I would check the spark as if no spark fuel does not burn.
Good Luck

Re: 1979 OMC 140

boatist, thanks for the reply. I have checked the choke and cleaned the flame arrestor, it was very dirty, thought this was the problem but it is still doing it. I will check the fuel pump ASAP. I hadn't thought of that! I don't think it is a spark poblem, because I can replace the plugs and it runs fine for a little while, although i did notice yesterday after running on muffs, the coil seemed awful warm. Is it possible the coil is going bad and starts acting up when it gets warm? Thanks, Jdman

Jdman
I do not know answer about coil heating up. All I can say is when it is hot check the spark. What do the bad plugs look like. Are you useing the proper heat range plugs. My 1980 140 has only had plugs changed twice and they were working fine but just felt like should change at least every ten years.
