1979 Mercury 228 Crack?

Im looking at a different boat and i can't really get down in it to look at the sides of the engine block so im relying on cell phone pics i took. Boat is a 1979 Fiberform 24F cruiser.
Here is a pic and im not sure if it's a crack or leaking head gasket. Maybe you guys can help?

that is a crack from freezing (bad winterization I suspect)

really need better pics but head gaskets don't normally just leak in that area
