Hello, This is my firsr post though I've been reading them for a while. There sure are a lot of knowegeble on here. I have a 1979 inline 6 (115hp) I want to get the trim wiring working properly. motor did not have trim when I bought it. So i found the whole shebang on ebay and purchased it and installed it. The harness had three wires conected together near the trim pump because the switch for "trim" on the tilt cylinder was bad. Since i am a bit of a perfectionist I took it apart and rebuilt it. Found a new microswitch, spring etc. I know it works now by using my ohmmeter. I connected the wires that were connected together two on one side and one on the other to the trim swith on the cylinder. Now it works as "trim" meaning the motor goes up to max trim and stops when using the center button. But when I push the "trailer" button it won't go up any further, but when I push the down button it will go back down. I'm guessing I don't have it wired properly. Can anyone help me? The three wires coming out of the harness are pretty much color faded to all blue. FYI this motor is on a 1972 Fibercraft 20' that I spent the winter restoring including glassing in new stringers, transom floor etc, etc. I would really appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.

Re: 1979 merc outboard trim

thank you, thank you, thank you. I spent lots of time searching for that wiring diagram with no luck. It is exactly what I need. I also read on a post somewhere last night that you have to push both the trim and trailer buttons at the same time to get the motor all the way up. I didn't know that but will hook everything back up and try it today. Maybe I already have the wiring correct. I really need to get a manual but kinda short of cash until the second Wed of next month, lol. Can't find a free one on line to download for this motor. found for newer.

Yes, both middle and top buttons need to be pushed to make the motor tilt.

YEAH!! It works. It was the wiring diagram that did it. That and knowing to push both buttons at the same tine. Just have do do some soldering and route the wiring and this probem is fixed. Thanks to all for the help. I couldn't have done it without you guys. Happy cruising or fishing or ? to everyone. I'd buy the beer if you were here.
