What's the proper way to remove the crank pulley (just the pulley - balancer is fine I think). Should I be able to remove the 3 bolts and slide the pulley off the crank and/or gently pry between the pulley and the balancer or do I need a puller of some sort?

The 3 bolts should be it Ralph. If it's been on a while it may be grouchy and require a little "assistance".

It is grouchy for sure.. How safe is it to pry between the balancer and the pulley?

Don't Pry Against the Balancer ,...............

The Balancer is nothing more the a couple pc.s of steel, held together with a strip of Rubber,........
Don't Pry Against the Balancer ...........

You might try soaking it(The Pulley) good with your choice of penertrating oil,+ Tapping on it,........
1 trick is,.. Use a punch to reach the Flat Surface, right where the bolts go that you just took out,....... Several Good Swats, will usually free things up,...... It doesn't make a lot of sense,.. but driving it On, will help you get it Off...........
It'll cause the pulley to spring from it's mounting point.......... ;)

BTW,........
It's about Time you went to Work on that Old Barge,......................... :D
I've had this 1 old interupt switch sitting on My desk for Months,..............

I Guess you Don't Need It,..???... I never found a Mate for it............

Yup, that was it BTD. The nose bolt went through a washer and through the center of the pulley. I finally said, what the heck, cracked the bolt and the pulley came right off.

The pulley was only put on the engine 3 years ago and was a retread from the original 1979 260s. It developed a wobble and I wanted to get it swapped out before it became a problem.

Hey Bondo,

Yep I need it. Still got my info? Even if I just get the starboard engine shifting easily for now I'll be happy - it's got the power steering. I need to go check out those "retro" kits merc is selling to see if I can make them work...

Sorry Ralph, I assumed you had the crank bolt already out... should not have done that. My bad!
At least you have it off now.
