good morning all...
just got this motor, and am going to winterize it today.
I've started it w/ muffs, but havent ran it for over 2 minutes.
Never seen it pee, (in 2 minutes i ran it on muffs, but the marina says/said its a "perfect operating motor)
It's 40* today plus or minus, and my questions are...

"should i remove the prop before i start this task"

"how long should it take for this motor to get warm"?

"what temps should i avoid reaching"?

i have a infrared laser thermometer...

"will it pee on low idle or will i need to rev it to get solution/pee into head"
OR
"do i have to wait for the thermostat to open before it pees before letting the antifreeze in"?

If all above (impeller) doesn't work,

"should i just dump antifreeze in the head at the thermostat, and wait/worry till spring if it does'nt pee"

No antifreeze is needed because the motor is self draining. If there is no water coming from the telltale then you should not run it at all. Also testing the water pump with muffs is not correct. You need to have it deep down in a barrel or in the water.

So you ran it two minutes without water circulation. There is a real danger that you destroyed the water pump. There also is danger that you damaged the motor from overheating. Impossible to know without further information or investigation. Winter project??

If you do not know the condition / age of the impeller you need to install a new one !

There is no need to use antifreeze on that motor.-----A bit of oversell on the part of the marina perhaps.----Your location ?

If it is not pumping water then I think you should just leave it until it does. If you have drain screws on the carbs then you can drain them. Some times the pee tube is blocked and there is still water flowing through the motor. But as already said you need to change the water pump impeller.

I got the same motor and I tried running it with muffs. Water pump is not self priming and my muffs didn't push water up high enough until I squeezed them onto the transom with my hands. Then the water pump primed and would work just fine.

On another note, the tell tell not working doesn't mean that the water pump isn't working. I had a small stick shoved up into mine and I didn't know it until I pulled the hose off from the engine to the pee hole and tried to blow air through it. Small bugs like to get in there too and block it up.

Good luck with that motor, I'm crossing my finger that mine will be good to go next spring.
