1979 Johnson 70 HP 70EL79R

I can't figure out for the life of me what the difference is between a 70EL79R and a 70EL79.

I just bought a bass boat and it has the 1979 70HP 70EL79R and I want to buy an owners manual and parts book for it but I can only find them for the 70EL79.... What's the difference??

There is no difference.----Except for any minor changes ( paint color ) that occurred mid production run.-----------Install a new water pump impeller and test the overheat horn before launching the boat.

Doesn't hurt to have an IR tester on hand as well. Get the actual operating temp with the new impeller, running a little cautiously until you know what you have.
