I recently took apart the lower unit of my 1979 Johnson 35hp, to inspect the clutch dog and gears. I grinded down the gears and clutch dog, and started piecing it back together. I am now to the point of getting the reverse gear in followed by the oval bracket that the shifting rod screws into. I cannot figure out how to get the shifting rod bracket hooked to the cradle that shifts the dog clutch. I have tried putting it in reverse, neutral, and forward, with no luck. Does anyone know what I am talking about/know how to re-assemble this exact lower unit?
