Howdy Rob, welcome to iboats and the Starcraft neck of the wood!

That's a nice boat, but in short, I'd pass on it strictly due to the 470. Why? Head on over here and do a bit of reading on that driveline and you'll see why...

Happy hunting:)

Re: 1979 islander 22

thanks for the reply, and thanks for the welcome! thats one of the reason's i think he wants to much for it. the only thing he has done to the motor is replaced the generator and had the heat exchanger dipped in meratic acid, and a tune up. also says he is positive no coolant has leaked from the camshaft seal. so i would be willing to take a gamble at the 470 with possibly down the road a couple years replace it with a 4.3 or 3.0. what would you say it is worth? the owner said he would go to 5,000 without the depth finder and trax system. nada says average retail with those add ons it 2,794.00. i do think there is some value for restoring it but not 5,800.

Well, hmmmmmm...

Has he got some photos of the interior?

I think if it had the 4.3 or the 3.0 already in it I think I could get to the $5K mark. But without, ah, not so much.

Re: 1979 islander 22

Ok, I started to scan his threads there and I have a couple of issues I believe....

1. It appears as though he used treated plywood, bad move.

2. It appears as though he used thinned poly resin without fiberglassing, bad move x2.

3. It appears he used "Great Stuff" for a good portion of his flotation, bad move.

It breaks my heart to say this as he did a ton of work there, but all that stuff needs to come out.

So, in short, he has a great hull sitting on a solid looking trailer. But from where I'm sitting I'd be thinking driveline replacement and the total interior (transom too) needs to be removed and rebuilt:(

Yah, real bummer is his ad says...

"epoxy sealed marine grade wood"

...which would have been perfect. Unfortunately he neither used marine grade wood nor epoxy.:(

This is one of those great examples of how a fella is better off buying a totally trashed out hull for $500 as it would really be just about the same amount of rebuild work. Rats.

Welcome aboard Rob:)

Unfortunately I have to agree with what jasoutside is telling you.

A 470 is often costly to keep on the water and it sounds like the rebuild was lacking proper materials.

There are a ton of good Islanders out there so I'd pass on this one.

Good luck to ya!

Yah, I kinda think that $2500 - $6000 price point is a tough one. You really have to do your homework on em. They might look pretty good on the outside hiding a total gut and rebuild job underneath.

that one there is nice the one for 6500, i wish it had the mercrusier outdrive and a 4.3 but i could live without. im assuming the 130 hp is the 3.0? i think the little inline 4 ford is 120hp. would like a 22'

Poly resin alone has no strength to it, fiberglass must be laid with it. Without glass it will crack/chip away pretty quick. Epoxy can be used alone however.

And, thinned poly simply weakens the resin. Better off just laying it at full strength. (much debated over on the boat building thread)

Wow, yeah that dude did pretty much everything wrong on that Islander. Bummer cuz it's a nice hull. I'm sure he'll find someone who doesn't know any better to pay his asking price. Forget that OMC one as well. An OMC Cobra is bad enough. A Stringer? Friggin' forget it. At least Cobras can be converted to Merc.
