hey everyone im new to this forum and kinda new to boating so any help is greatly appreciated. Ive got a 1979 evinrude 115 thats been running well until a few days ago. I took my son out on it tuesday evening to go fishing and on the way back to the hill it started spitting and sputtering and died. Had to use trolling motor to get back to hill. Called a buddy of mine and he said it sounded like the carbs so i cleaned out all the jets got new needle, seat, and float. Put everything back together and now after priming the bulb i have to unhook gas line from tank and the boat will only crank when the bulb is sucked flat and when i hook it back to tank it dies. It will only run when the warm up lever is up and soon as i push it down to put it in gear it dies. I am lost so any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance

Welcome to Iboats.

Having a hard time deciphering what you're trying to say, but I will ask you this;

When you are priming the carbs with the bulb on the fuel line, does the bulb eventually get firm? If it does not get firm, either the float height in the carbs are wrong, or you may have a fuel pump with a ruptured diaphragm.

yes, the bulb does get hard but the engine will not crank. I have to disconnect the fuel line from tank and just keep spinning it over and it will finally crank when the bulb is sucked flat and as soon as i connect the fuel line and the bulb fills, it dies out again. Ive set the floats the way I have read from other post but still not sure if I have it right. Is the float supposed to move more than a 1/4 inch or so? When its set level the little bar on the back of the arm is resting on the seat preventing it from moving hardly at all. I have also checked the pump and nothing looks punctured.

Post some pics of how the float is set, someone will be able to help you by looking at that. Are you sure the bulb isn't bad? Pull the screen off the fuel filter on the side of the engine and make sure it's not clogged and have a look at the diaphram while you're in there.

The hose bulb should not get sucked flat. Either you have a significant fuel restriction or the ball valves in the hose bulb are bad. Any chance you have the fuel hose connected backward?

that is what i have. the floats are not cocked they are level across the front. the little piece that hangs behind the hinge is a 1/8 inch away from seat in this position. the only time the bulb goes flat is when i have it unhooked from tank and thats the only time it will crank. as soon as i hook it back up the motor dies.

Have you done a compression and spark test on it ?? Spark should jump a 7/16 " air gap on a tester.

Re: 1979 evinrude 115 help!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the delay in answering but yes I have done the comp test and gap test. Only seven pounds diff in strongest to weakest cylinder and gap is fine. I think I got my floats set right over the weekend but now when I open the throttle it will get up and go then it suddenly slows like I let off the throttle. I like to think of myself as somewhat mechanically inclined but I just can't figure this thing out.

May be a weak fuel pump. The engine may be running out of fuel. When the engine slows, have someone constantly prime the fuel hose bulb. If the engine picks back up and runs fine at WOT- as long as your contantly prime the fuel hose bulb, you have a fuel delivery problem. Look for a fuel restriction and even a weak fuel pump.
