hello ive got a dt 30hp 2 cylinder electric start longshaft .year is 1979 the condition very good. it has not done much work and very low hours using a 10 inch pitch prop. is there anything i can do to uprate this motor as i dont want to get rid of it its been a good reliable engine to me. the rope as only ever been used twice due to me flattening the battery with lights etc. its never been modified in any way and starts first time every time so you see why i want to keep it. but i need a bit more oomph to put iton a bigger boat (17ft) will enlarging the jets help adjusting timming etc, and anything that will help will be apreciated

Well Phil,
Over here, 17' boats are powered by 90-175hp motors!
Depending on hull style, I dont think a 30hp motor would get a 17 footer on plane.

Good luck... Canuck 16.

Re: 1979 dt 30 tune up

im not intending to barefoot with it canuck. just get it going a bit more than normal .over here we normally put 150 plus on a 17 footer but im not going to do that untill end of season due to cash flow. but maybe even 175hp might be on my list but for now ill use the little suzi 30 to potter about on the river. so a little help with more grunt from this little engine would be nice.

Throw the motor on the boat and see if it will get on plane as it is. If it wont plane as is, I dont think it ever will, and you would be wasting your time and money trying to squeeze a few more ponnies out of it.
Keep in mind a 79' motor, the HP was rated at the crankshaft, not at the prop like they are today.
On my 19' deep V cuddy, I run a 200hp Yam for main power, and a 8hp kicker. When I'm running on the 8hp, my boat goes 6 1/2 mph on GPS at half throtle. At full throtle it's still going 6 1/2 mph (hull speed), the only difference is it makes more noise and burns more petrol!

Good luck... Canuck.
