I am restoring a 1959 Crownline. I need a motor for it and came across a 1979 70HP Chrysler outboard with controls for 300 bucks. The guy says "it runs good". Is this worth going after or keep looking?

For $300 it sounds like a good deal. Chryslers are simple motors and parts and service aren't as easy to find as for the comparable Johnson/Evinrude/Mercury etc. but for that price, assuming it passes a compression test, I doubt you could get hurt.

Well, at 300 bucks it isn't hurting you--provided it runs, BUT if you are restoring a period boat and want a period correct engine, a West Bend would be correct. Chrysler bought them in early 60s.

However, I suspect that it would be easier to find a Merc or Johnny-Rude than a West Bend of that era and neither of them should be too expensive either.

Right now not looking really for a period correct motor...just one to get us going for next spring. The proper motor for the boat will be the last touch.
