1979 Blueband 50 HP Impellar Problem?

I recently purchased this motor from a man who hadn't run it for 20 years. Put a new impellar in it as well as new plugs. Took it out on the lake for the first time today. After awhile it fired up and ran fairly well. Good top end, good take off, no bogging down, but a little cough at slow idle. The entire time(about an hour) it was pumping water, coming out of the weep hole and exhaust. Read some posts on the forum about the rough idling. Decided to use carb cleaner in the carbs in the driveway. Put a set of earmuffs on it as well as later putting it in a garbage can 2/3 full of water. Although it fired up, I could get no water to come out of the weep hole or the exhaust. Tried several times, but no luck. What could have happened in the time I brought it home from the lake and 3 hours later when I put the muffs on it?
Thanks a lot for helping.

It may not have gotten hot enough to open the thermostat.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Is the thermostat easily accesible and if so, where is it located? Wondering if it is stuck closed as the cylinder heads seemed hot to the touch.

Upon rereading the post heading, your motor doesn't have a thermostat. Sorry about that, long day at the office.... So if there is not water, then you have a blockage, or the impeller went.
I'd drop the lower end, and check to make sure, the impeller is ok, plus you can try and flush out the system.
What shape was the old impeller in?

The old impellar was somewhat disintegrated from setting in the previous owner's garage for so long in the desert. I ordered a new one and only ran it once before taking it to the lake to see if it was pumping and I had put it in properly. It was at that time, but then it sat for several months until today when I had it out on the lake.

I'd drop the lower end, and look for a blockage then, maybe some old part of the previous impeller was still in there.
