1979 alpha drive lower shift cable

I am in the process of getting ready to change my lower shift cable on my 1979 MerCruiser Alpha Dr. have watched several videos on how to do this have a question. To make the job easier can I just pull the inner cable through the sheath and And push the new Internet cable back through

You might post this in the MerCruiser forum. I did that job only once, and followed the manual precisely. There may be shortcuts.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... No, as the outer cable wears worse than the inner cable,....
