Always wanted an inline 6 90hp and finally found one in good shape for cheap (the trick is to wait long enough!).

Per the serial number, it is an early 1979 and so has the distributor, pointless one coil ignition instead of the newer electronic, a coil per each cylinder ignition.

Is this a good and reliable ignition? Can you swap to the newer electronic igniton without swapping out the powerhead? I am not too enthusiastic about the little timing belt, but cars have them, so maybe it is ok. Experience?

Thanks.

Re: 1979 90hp Mercury

If that motor is a distributor, it is likely a bit older than '79.(like 1977) Sometimes parts with newer serial numbers get used.

The battery/distributor ignition is fine. With some luck it will last forether. Replacement parts are a bit pricy, so if you have a junkyard you might get a replacement distributor.

BTW - There is no easy way to change over to ADI ignition, sinc the configuration of the block is different to allow mounting of the trigger, six coils and switchboxes.

just got a present, a friend gave me his boat, after long time of asking for it. He rarely used it. Cleaned up real nice. Has power at battery and solinoid, believe starter is clicking. any positive things to check? Before buying any new parts. Believe maybe the solinoid? thanks

Jump the posts on the starter solenoid w/ a screw driver to see if the starter is kicking. Make sure the batt. terminals are clean and tight!
