I just picked up a 16' starcraft with a '79 55HP Evnirude and got it out on the water for the first time last night. The engine starts and idles really well and it got me up on plane doing about 25 mph but from a stand still or barely idling forward the motor will hesitate and sometimes die, when I hit the throttle hard to accelerate. Would this be a carburetor issue or fuel pump issue? Something else?

Timer base could be sticky. That'll make it conk out when you give it the throttle. Take a look, it should go to full advance before very much carburetor throttle shaft opening. Put another way, the carbs should open very little before it reaches full spark advance.
