I am planning on putting on this motor

it seems a little underpowered then what it should be on my fishing boat. It runs and starts up fairly east, on idle it sometimes cuts out when it is warmed up, but other then that it gets me going were i need to go.

Where should i start at when going over this motor? What kind of performance should i expect out of this motor?

I want to use it because A) i think it will look good on my new/old boat with that old style cover it has and B) hell you cant beat free on a price lol

any help guys would be much appreaciated

Re: 1979 55HP CHRYSLER

I would start with going to chryslercrew.com and buy and download factory service and parts manuals and I would also buy a clymer manual. Change impeller after this season and if you are in cold climate and you plan on winterizing it to fog the motor, change lower lube and hit all the greese zerks and make sure gas has stabilizer in it. L82C champion spark plugs seems to be the best for the discontinued L4J plugs chrysler recommends. Decarb every year with deep creep made by seafoam. Recircuilation system on that motor is kind of a joke but it is advisable to take it apart periodically and clean the screens. Rebuild the fuel pump 18-7806 and the carb 18-7037 and replace all the fuel line including replacing the primer bulb with a high quality one.

On the boat depending on the weight you will probably only get about 30 miles per hour and about 2 miles per gallon at WOT.

Re: 1979 55HP CHRYSLER

You probably only get about 40 HP out of that motor but they are reliable and will run forever. Mine is 40 years old and it starts and runs better then a lot of newer ones I see at the landing. The biggest concern is compression and spark. Alot of the ignition parts are no longer availible and if you loose a piston the ride is over. Free is a damn good price. Good luck with it and if you have any problems with it post back here.
