I have a 1980 35, model E35TCSM that has a bad lower unit. The clutch dog rounded and wore the forward and reverse gears down pretty bad.

I have been trying not to bite the bullet to buy a new gear set for this foot because I am currently on a very limited budget, so.......I found a 1979 35 model number 359038 and see that practically all of the internal parts are the same, however, the gear casing is different between the two motors that I have...the 80 model has plastic removable fins for the water intake and the 79 doesn't. It looks like they will bolt up the same.

The shift linkage unbolts on the 80 in the lower unit by removing the plastic fins and the 79 doesn't???? How can I make the lower unit on the 79 work on my 80 motor? The 79 is a good motor with a bad impeller and it is long shaft and I need the standard shaft on my boat. Also, I have the clymer's repair manual but cannot determine exactly how to change the drive shaft....

I am hoping to get advice on this from somebody who knows these motors so that I can do the repair myself bc the nearest marine shop is over 200 miles away from where I live.

Your manual is absolutely useless in this situation. you need an OEM evinrude manual.

i can not find a model 359038 recheck your #.
