I have a 1979 140hp chrysler motor, the lower unit has died,
Does anyone know what years and other hp's lower units will fit my 140? as in will a 1987 125hp lower unit fit? the picture of it on ebay, it looks identical to my 79. If anyone can even send me in the right direction to search for that info needed to put my yacht back into the water would be deeply appreciated mbellgardatyahoodotcom

Thx guys

Fill out the profile. The lower might fit as long as the shaft size is the same.
Measure the transom. From the center to the bottom of the V It should be a 20 or 25" J

Post some close-up pics.

As long as both are the same shaft length--that is, 20 or 25 inch-- (Yes, Chrysler did make a 25 inch length in 79. I have one in my garage.) ANYTHING from any three or four cylinder engine 1979 up to 1994 will fit. If you really want to wake up the 140 though try for an 85 or 90 horsepower lower with a 2 to 1 gear ratio and step up 2 pitches in prop. You will gain 3-5 MPH.

Re: 1979 140hp lower unit ?

Thx a lot gentlemen for your info and quick response. I felt that if the other unit looks identical with the same length of shaft and spline count that they would work. Also feel that it will be cheaper to find a lower unit than to try to replace all the parts that may be bad. I know there are gears to replace not counting seals, bearings etc its slipping that bad.

Their is one on ebay at the moment that is 85 hp for $365 I may go get it :)

Again my thx
