1978 mercury 50hp 4 cyl (blue box)

Hi. I started the above motor today for first time In 20 yrs . I just poured a bit petrol in the pipe and stuck the jump leads straight onto starter terminal and she started right up, no control cables wires attached or nothing ,I noticed a small blue resistor looking thing mounted by one screw to the right of starter it has 2 wires running to it. ,one is seperated close to epoxy and I want to get another one, what's the name of this part I need. thanks

I think you are describing a mercury switch that kills spark when the motor is tilted up or strikes an under water object .

Thanks a bunch for that ,that's what it will be ,I will take it out rather than replacing it now that I know what it is.thanks for your very fast reply again sir
