my engine is a johnson 235 tl. it was fresh water run, before i had it. i have the problem, that if i let off the warm up lever it stalls out. however if i leave the lever up the engine races to unsafe speeds, such as 7000 rpm's. it runs eratically, and i cant figure it out. i found a small leak in the fuel line, and will correct that, but i dont know if thats the problem. please give me a hand with this.

First! start with the basic spark, and compression test. Then a sync,& link check. If OK, I would take a look at the carb's for a cleaning, and new kit's.

You don't have to raise the warm up lever all the way up. It works just like the throttle. 7000 RPM will turn your engine into an anchor. Has the engine behaved this way ever since you acquired it? If so, forget the link&sync and rebuild the carbs. You'll have to do the link&sync afterwards anyway.

the engine wont start if the lever isnt all the way up. it wont run well at anything below like 4000 rpm's. it is now fouling plugs quickly to. i was told to check the floats in the carb, as the engine wasnt run for a while before i got it. any other ideas? and thanks for all the help

Excuse me guys for butting in.

Upinsmoke is a link&sinc always required after a carb clean, and if you don't mind why is it required? thanks for your time.

Since the carbs are removed, disassembled, and then reassembled, they may not be positioned exactly in the same place as they were before and since there are many linkages involved, they can be altered during this process. Even slight differences can affect these adjustments. Link&sync is not difficult to do but you need a service manual to do it properly. It ensures the ignition advance and carb butterflies move in synchronization and that the carb butterflies open fully and in unison. Don't ask how to do it. The process is far too long to describe here.

Upinsmoke it's me again,

I have checked my motor and the throttle plates in all 4 carbs completely close when the throttle is closed and they are wide open at W.O.T setting.
The cam roller is rite on the mark on the cam at idle. the W.O.T mark is facing directly forward at w.O.T.
Does this indicate that my settings ar correct?
