1978 evinrude

I got 1978 70 HP evinrude,with newer set of controls.now when i plugged them together it does not turn over.but if i run jump wire from solonoid white wire, back to ignition switch to purple wire,it turns over.any suggestions.thank RON.

Spud....are both harness plugs RED?<br /><br />If they are, sounds like you need to troubleshoot the ignition circuit. Are you sure the control is in neutral? Putting the control box in forward will not let you start the engine. Make sure the control handle is straight up.<br />If you are not getting 12Volts at the white wire terminal on the starter solenoid, then either the key switch is bad, the start in neutral switch in the control box is bad or there is a broken wire in the harness. I would get a service manual to troubleshoot. It will also show you how to take the control box apart to check the switches.

Can you get the choke to operate with the key on? If not, it may simply be the 20 amp fuse by the solenoid.<br /><br />Good luck!

THANKS OBJ AND DHADLEY,for your help with my 70 evinrude.the problem was the neutral switch. THANKS RON.
