My '78 Evi 85 V4 runs great but this year when I drained the lower end oil it was mostly water. Thankfully it only had a few short runs on it in that condition.
I have pulled the lower unit (some old posts on here guided me through, thanks guys) but I'd like to pull the shafts and have a look at the pinion gear plus forward and reverse gears as there was a fair amount of metal flecking in the water/oil I got out of the lower. I have had a look at the exploded parts diagrams but I cannot figure out how to pull the shaft out of the top of the lower unit. I know, order a factory service manual -- I have but it won't be here for a week. Can someone point me in the right direction? Gear case is in neutral, drive and prop shafts both spin freely.
Oh yeah, I have a sneaking suspicion the former owner was deathly afraid of gaskets and seals as there wasn't one between the lower and the leg or anywhere else I've been and all the o-rings and seals look ancient. At least I know the likely water infiltration points!

thanks,
Andy
