1978 Alumacrat FD with "factory Vinyl Coating"

I have a 1978 Alumacraft FD-15 which has a tag on the front seat saying the aluminum is protected by a factory vinyl coating. Anybody have any advice for cleaning, or stripping off old decals or paint, etc., etc., etc.! Hooror stories, successes?
Permanent, removable? Thanks
