Hey all, new here to posting but have been reading for a very long time.

Having some issues with a new motor in my possession, hoping someone can help me out. Two weeks ago i had taken the motor out with my daughter, It worked fine, Not an issue. One week later, I take it out hunting it left from the launch fine,I get about a two minute ride and it loses all power and dies. I check the gas lines, they are attached. I pump the ball again till it was tight. Motor start and runs fine, I keep pumping the ball all the way to hunting destination. After hunting all day,I go to leave and motor start fine again, Runs fine at Idle, I proceed to give it throttle and it dies again. I now have to hold the choke and pump the ball to get it to start. It starts and the whole way back to the launch i'm holding the choke half way and pumping the ball.

After reading all the previous posts I have determined on my own that this could be a dirty carb and/or bad fuel pump. Should I replace the pump and get a carb kit? Something I can do on my own? I'm from Canada and have priced out some parts from local shops, CRAZY$$.. Can someone recommend a good place to purchase parts?

Second, Proper water flow for cooling. Mine just trickles out with little to no force. Should I be concerned? Possible water pump replacement as well? On a scale of 1 to 10 difficulty, how would u rate this?

I did notice some oil on and around the spark plugs, is this normal?

This would be my first outboard motor.. So any help/tips/advice/ reading material would be appreciated..

Thanks for your time, I'm looking forward to reading any response. If you require more info, Please just ask.

Try running in a barrel with the tank higher than your engine. This will make it a gravity feed and should help you determine if your pump is gone bad. Sounds like your impeller is shot and that should be changed right away. You can do it yourself and don't be afraid to ask here for help if you need to. You could pull the carb. and take a look inside to be sure it looks clean but if it were me I'd probably order a kit and do it when I've got it off. Iboats should have what you need but shipping costs will be high. Many times I just buy at the local dealer unless I need lots of parts. Then the savings will offset the shipping costs. ********** is a place I have used as they ship USPS. UPS always adds a whack of brokerage fees which makes ordering from the U.S. very upsetting so whom ever you choose make sure they ship USPS. Here is a link that will serve you very well until you get an OMC factory service manual for yourself. Best of luck. Rick.

Edit: I see my suggested supplier got edited. I'm just fine with that as Iboats does offer this fantastic forum for free to us all and therefore, we should support them.

Rick,
Thanks for your response. I have ordered three kits, for a total of 142.00 Carb, Water pump and fuel pump. Same stuff at my local dealer would have totaled 230 + tax I hope I don't get dinged to hard. It was a total of $25 shipping cost for said items. First time ordering from the states. :/ little nervous now.

I will be picking up a manual before the parts get here.

There is a good place in BC to get aftermarket parts from. Very reasonable & Canada Post shipping. Minimum order of 25 bucks. PM me if you want their site info. I ordered parts for my 61 18hp from them.

Rick,

I a found a guy on youtube who shows u step by step how to remove the fuel pump on my motor, So that I can do.
Do you know of any videos like that for a carb and waterpump? Step by step instruction provided in the manuals?

hi crowsfoot and welcome to iboats!, if you are comfortable with a wrench in hand, the carb and water pump will be a breeze. you may want to spray the bolts on the lower unit with a good quality penetrating fluid now, while you're waiting for parts, just to lessen the chance of twisting one off. other than that, take lotsa pics before , and during the work, it can be a big help during reassembly ( thats if your memory is as bad as mine!! lol). if you run into any problems.....post back, the members here are a great bunch, willing to share a wealth of knowledge and experience.

nwcove, I'm looking forward to get this torn down and repaired. Or at least give a good try. I will be spraying those bolts down like you have suggested. Kicker is, motor dies beginning of duck season :(

And the moral of the story is, "never get a new engine for duck season". LOL. This motor should give you many years of duck hunting once you get her running right. I would recommend you check your compression and write down the numbers so you know the start point of what condition it is in. I always do that before spending money on them. Rick.

Re: 1978 9.9 evinrude troubles

Just a little update!! After a long hard thought process and the stamp of approval from the wife, I purchased a brand new Yamaha 9.9 two stroke. I couldn't feel confident in this Evinrude motor anymore. I placed the motor up for sale and listed the problems, It was sold the next day.

Again, Thanks to everyone here who took the time to answer my questions and give me advice.

Rick, Thoughts on the Yammi? Good or bad?
