1978 85hp tilt and trim question...or two.

Hi,

One of my trim cylinders is leaking around the shaft. I guess I need to replace the o-ring(s) etc.. My question is, how do you get the cap off (see picture). Looks like it might need a special tool?? AND are there any tips that might help me out.

Also if it becomes necessary to remove the tilt/trim asm, do you have to remove the motor from the boat?? Do you have to take one of the stern brackets off for clearance?

You need to get a "spanner" wrench at a local auto parts store. It's not hard to replace the oring and wipers in the cap that you have circled. You can work on this without removing the trim unit. Make sure the engine is supported by the locking mechanism so it won't fall while you have it in the up position.
