A friend of mine made one out of some mahogany veneer. He laminated about three layers of veneer with epoxy over a form cut from a 4x4 that was the same shape as the top of the box. Trimmed it, rounded the edges, stained and varnished. It looked great - a lot better than the original pleather cover...
