I want to add power tilt and trim to my manual lift 1978 85HP Johnson, model 85ML78C. What year Johnson/Evinrude units will fit this motor? I do not want to add an after-market unit.

1977 and up. Just make sure you get all the electrical components that go with it.

Re: 1978 85HP Johnson Power Tilt/Trim Retrofit,

Thanks boobie! I can deal with the electrical controls, whether two wire or three, it was the physical fit I was not sure of. I hope to find a reasonably priced mid '80s (non Fast Track unit) and needed to know it would bolt in. Any other info you can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1978 85HP Johnson Power Tilt/Trim Retrofit,

i think your 78 85HP takes the dual ram system. I don't think the fast track will fit. I think Boobie might have meant 77 and up twin ram systems by prestolite or calco.

RRitt, take a look at the parts brake down on shop.evinrude.com. I think the dual ram system was last used in 1976. I believe the fast track came out in 1991. After that OMC used both the conventional and fast track mid section power t/t.

Re: 1978 85HP Johnson Power Tilt/Trim Retrofit,

Thanks Boobie and RRitt for all of the help. I plan to look for a good used PTT unit now and I'm hoping all I need to do now is remove the lift assist cylinder (spring or gas filled?), the manual lock down system, bolt in the PTT, add some controls and BAM! No more strained back!!! Thanks again.
