Hi,

Ready to tackle the water pump and will need to undo the shift linkage at the power head to remove the lower unit. (From what I have read). Need advice as to how to do that! Looks a bit hard to get at but maybe I am just not seeing it the right way. any suggestions appreciated..

I have a 1973 85 HP...but after reviewing the schematic for your engine, suspect yours is the same set up.

The shift rod extends up the exhaust housing, and connects to the engine just below the carbs.
I found mine when looking from the starboard side...look under and behind the carbs. There are two short (about 6 inch) bars that are hold the shift linkage to the rod that extends down through the exhaust housing. Using a socket wrench, I removed the bolt holding the shift linkage to the block, which allows you to spread the arms holding the pin to the shift rod. I could then reach in with a long needle nose pliers to remove the pin/bolt which is holding the shift rod to the shift linkage. Good luck...not really difficult...just irritating.

Your 78 has the newer style shift mechanism, similar, but definitely not the same as older belcrank system the 73 engine mentioned above has. You will access the clevis on your engine from the starboard side of the engine. A 1/4" drive socket set with a swivel may be helpful.

Hi,

Ok is the shift linkage connected to the clevis by a threaded bolt, pin and cotter key or?

(See illustration...)

You will want to leave that clevis firmly clamped to the shaft. Only remove the screw/pin. That will release the shift rod. You will find it easier to access if you shift to either forward or reverse (I forget which.)
