1978 85 hp Evinrude Model #85899 Photos for review and opinions

In my previous post, "1979 Evinrude 85 hp Model # 85999c $800 is this high or low?", it was concluded by all that this is a 1978, not a 1979. Current owner corrected Mod # to 85899 and along with the 1517cc on lower unit makes it a 78.
I am going to look at and run this motor on Saturday. I received much excellent advice from the first post, but wanted to edit and re post clearer photos for review by anyone willing to do so. Thanks

It almost appears that head gasket on port side is installed wrong.

No that is not the head gasket !----That would be a leak at the exhaust cover gasket or the base gasket.

I realize that is not the head gasket. That was the only thing I could see that looked wrong. I presume your referring to the cylinder head gasket. I have looked it over and can't identify what you see, especially on the port side.

Sharp eyes, racer. I had to look awhile to find that tab sticking up. But the starboard side has one too. Can it be an identifier for a different gasket to change compression ratio?

The motor looks like it is in decent condition, as far as looks go.

I see that tab on starboard side, but still can't see it on the port side. What does it mean?

After looking even more, I now see the tab on the starboard side as well. So again, what does it mean and should I be concerned about it regarding purchase?

For it's age, the engine is clean. No signs of overheat (bubbled paint.) Carbs and block look very clean-not a lot of dried fuel stains. The tab on the head gasket is on all of them. The word "top" may be visible on both sides-it's part of the factory stencil that says something like: top arrow to the exhaust.

The tab on the port is on the left or outboard, the tab on the starboard is to the right or outboard. Will post photos blown up of those areas in the AM.
