Hello all, I have a chance to pick up the motor above for a really good price. The motor is in Va, and I'm in upstate NY, so I wanted to be sure it was worth the trip. The owner made a video of the engine operating, and it seems to run good at idle and at fast idle. My question is this: any know, common issues with this engine I should be aware of? It is going to replace the 40 HP Johnson I have on my 16' Bonito bowrider. The Johnson will push the boat at about 30 MPH with just me on board. The boat is rated for 70 HP. How much better do you all think it will be with the 70? Thanks in advance.

Re: 1978 70 HP

the one thing i would look at is the wiring in the motor.i have a 78 80 hp and the motor ran fine while i tested it and as soon as i got it back to georgia the trouble began.i spliced the main harness 6 times before i just replaced it at $200.then i spliced the wiring to the trigger and the stator.motor running fine.wiring looked good but had turned green with corroision inside and was breaking inside the insulation.the motor quit running again this week and i found a wire at the trigger had broken inside the insulation.so iguess i'll replace the trigger and the stator.just look at the wiring good.just a thought.see ya' Bill
