I am working on a 1978 Evinrude 6 hp. I have rebuilt the carb. and fuel pump and replaced the fuel hose. It has decent compression (75 psi per cylinder) and strong spark. It ran fine for several days and now will start, run mostly with the choke on, and stall within 20 or so seconds. Pressing the priming bulb doesn't help. I thought the float was maybe getting hung up in the float bowl, but that does not appear to be the case. I have cleaned the carb twice, with carb cleaner and compressed air. What am I missing?

Sure sounds like fuel not getting to the carburetor. Pull the fuel line off the carb after it stalls and see if the normal amount of gas flows out of the line and the carb bowl.

Pulling the line off as above and squeezing the bulb should push fuel out the end of the line. (With the line connected, you should hear fuel flow into the carb when you squeeze the bulb.)

I would guess you still have a blockage in the carb. Might describe how you are cleaning it (spraying cleaner isn't usually enough). Must disassemble and clean out all openings/jets.

It does appear as if I have a blockage in the carb. I will disassemble it again. When I rebuilt it I totally disassembled it, cleaned all the passages with spray carb. cleaner and then compressed air but must have missed something. I will report back. Thank you.

Problem Solved: I had replaced the fuel line from the tank to the carb so that is no problem. I had rebuilt the fuel pump but decided to tear it apart to review. The little spring (the one with the hat) was no longer verticle and had fallen over. I fixed this and the motor is now good as new. Thanks for your help.
